HMRC Facts
HMRC’s latest figures reveal that the UK’s tax gap—the shortfall between the amount of tax that should be collected and what is actually received—stands at £39.8 billion, representing 4.8% of total tax liabilities.
Small businesses contribute the largest share of this gap, accounting for approximately 60%, or £23.9 billion. In addition, individuals, including high-net-worth and general taxpayers, are responsible for around 5% each, equating to £2 billion.
To close this gap, HMRC relies heavily on targeted and random Tax and VAT investigations.
