Are you ready for tax season – or are scammers ready for you?

As the 31 January 2025 Self-Assessment deadline looms, how confident are you in spotting a tax scam?

Fraudsters thrive during tax season, capitalising on deadlines and pressure to lure unsuspecting individuals and businesses into their traps.

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has reported a surge in scam activity, with a 16.7 per cent increase in reports over the past year.

Between November 2023 and October 2024 alone, 144,298 scam reports were logged. What do these scams look like, and how can you protect yourself?

What makes a scam a scam?

If someone contacted you claiming to be HMRC, how would you know it was legitimate?

Consider these common red flags:

  • Unusual communication methods – Would HMRC ask for personal or banking details over text or email? Absolutely not. Would they leave a threatening voicemail demanding immediate payment? Again, no.
  • Suspicious links or attachments – If a message includes a link promising a tax refund or an attachment asking for your details, would you click it? Be cautious, these are classic scam tactics designed to steal your information or compromise your devices.
  • Pressure tactics – Do legitimate organisations rely on fear to prompt action? Scammers often create urgency, threatening arrest or legal action if you don’t pay immediately. HMRC does not operate this way.

How can you stay one step ahead?

Now that you know the warning signs, what practical steps can you take to stay protected?

  • Verify before you act – Have you checked the communication directly with HMRC? Use only the contact details on their official website.
  • Secure your devices – Is your security software up to date? Keeping your devices protected is a simple but effective defence against malware and phishing.
  • Get professional guidance – Would having a trusted expert make navigating your Self-Assessment easier? Our team can handle the details and help you identify legitimate communications with confidence.

Have you considered the cost of falling for a scam, not just financially, but emotionally too?
