Accountant's desert expedition raises thousands for charity

A partner at one of London’s leading accountancy firms has cycled more than 250 miles through the deserts of the Middle East to raise money for top international charity, Norwood.

Grunberg & Co’s Alain Stechler undertook the journey from the Sea of Galilee through to the Dead Sea and Petra, as one of three groups of cyclists and a group of trekkers aiming to raise £1 million for Norwood, which helps more than 7,000 disadvantaged and disabled children and adults each year.

Pedalling alongside 70 riders in his group, Alain has managed to raise around £7,500 en-route through the searing heat of the deserts of Jordan.

Norwood is a cause close to Alain’s heart as he has been a first-hand witness of the support it provides. His sister and brother-in-law have been helped on a daily basis, for the last 23 years, by the charity with the care of Alain’s niece, Stephanie, who has Cerebral Palsy.

His sister, Judith, undertook the last leg of her momentous journey with his niece on a specialist bike provided by Norwood.

Speaking after returning to the UK, Alain said: “Norwood provides a lifeline to thousands of families every year and has done fantastic work supporting Stephanie, for which our entire family is very grateful.

“This challenge was certainly no walk in the park, but the thought that the money I was raising was going to such a deserving cause definitely drove me on and it was wonderful to be joined by my sister and niece at the finish.”

Norwood is currently celebrating its twenty-fifth anniversary of tough charity challenges. It holds these events each year to raise money for its staff and support centres, which made this year’s trip extra special for Alain and the other riders.

“I would like to thank everyone for their contributions, they will make a huge difference to the wonderful work Norwood do for over 7,000 disadvantaged and disabled children and adults – giving them a real chance in life,” added Alain.

Despite completing his challenge, Alain is still raising money for Norwood and is calling on people to recognise his achievement and donate to
